WASHINGTON — U.S. Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson considered former U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici a role model and close friend.

While Domenici fought for New Mexico on the Senate floor, Wilson championed for New Mexico’s First Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

When Domenici announced he wasn’t running for re-election due to his debilitating brain condition, Wilson ran for his open seat. She wasn’t elected, but nearly eight years later President Donald Trump named her Air Force Secretary.

Wilson sent KOB-TV the following statement:

I am saddened by the news that my friend, mentor, colleague, fellow New Mexican, and great American, Senator Pete Domenici passed away this morning.

I always felt privileged and fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Senator Domenici on so many projects important to the country and New Mexico.  Others will remember his many contributions as a leader and legislator. To me, he was a mentor whom I deeply respected. He was always available to offer his advice and a word of encouragement to me as I served the State of New Mexico.  I could not have asked for better.  My thoughts and prayers are with Nancy and his family, and his many friends around the state and nation.
