ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The largest school district in the state issued an apology after refusing to allow for a moment of silence for the Aztec school shooting victims. It happened during last weekend’s Metro Spirit Championships.

In a written statement APS said that moments of silence at the beginning of school-sponsored athletic events have proven to be controversial in years past. It goes on to say that the request was made just minutes before the start of the competition so it was denied.

APS says the decision not to hold a moment of silence "came across as insensitive, but it doesn’t reflect how we are feeling. It was a mistake and for that, we apologize."
