There were tense budget cut discussions in the Roundhouse this week about the devastating impact more funding cuts would have on schools in New Mexico, but the head of the New Mexico Education Department was nowhere to be found.

The Senate Finance Committee says they did invite Education Secretary Hanna Skandera to their meeting.

The Senate Finance Committee was packed on Tuesday with educators concerned about the impact of a looming budget cut to the state’s already cash-strapped schools.

The educators present, including the presidents of New Mexico universities, testified those cuts would force schools to lay off teachers and cut programs.

“She is the lead expert on education and without that direction, it leaves us essentially in the dark depending on teachers, and they provide good information, superintendents, they gave us good information, presidents of universities too enlightened on what’s going on and that the impact is going to be. And quite honestly it’s not very favorable,” said Senator Carlos Cisneros.

KOB reached out to a spokesperson for Skandera for an answer, and have not yet heard back.
