AZTEC, N.M. – Following deadly school shooting in December, school district officials in Aztec are looking to beef up security measures at the high school.

"I call it 'planned urgency.' We want to be urgent. But we want to make careful decisions," Aztec School District Superintendent Kirk Carpenter said.

Those decisions that begin on Zia Street.

"Closing the Zia Street will really allow us to do a lot better planning in short-term fortifying of the campus," Carpenter said.

Because the street currently runs right through campus, it divides the school in half, leaving the main campus on the north side of the street, and the gym and a couple classrooms on the south side.

That creates a security breach for the school. At any given point during the day, one-third of the student population is separated from the main campus.

The request to close the street, as well as for a full-time school resource officer, was presented to the city this week.

"We understand how budgets are, we know how our budget is. It's not easy," Carpenter said. "I think right now is the time to ask, because they are developing their budget. It seems like a positive thing for them."

School officials are also considering remodeling the entrance bridges in front of the school in order to create a better sightline for staff and security.

"We also want to try to maintain the balance of having our campus still feel welcoming," Carpenter said. "But at the same time safety is the most important."
