Twenty containers were left on the side of the tracks while others sustained heavy damage when the train derailed around 1:30 p.m. It's unclear what caused the derailment, but Union Pacific spokesperson Jeff DeGraff said they are investigating.

The crew members were treated for minor injuries.

The derailment forced Gunter Ranch Road near Deming to close. DeGraff said the route will remain closed for several hours and trains will be rerouted.
