CARLSBAD, N.M. -- Work has finally started to replace the main elevators at Carlsbad Caverns.

National Park Service officials said construction began this week to modernize the primary elevators at the park, including installing new motors and elevator cars.

The primary elevator system was originally installed in 1955. It had some technical problems in the last couple of years, causing the elevators to shut down.

Visitors can still use a secondary elevator to access the park.
