ROSWELL, N.M. -- Detectives in southeast New Mexico continue their investigation after they say a man led sheriff’s deputies and Roswell police officers on a pursuit on Sunday.

Chaves County Sheriff Britt Snyder said the man behind that wheel was Jose Montelongo. After trying to make contact with him, officers say he drove off leading them to a residential area. It eventually resulted in an officer-involved shooting.

"The Roswell police called in their SWAT officers and this standoff at that location probably lasted a couple of hours," Snyder said.

Officers tried to negotiate with Montelongo, but he led police on another pursuit, this one ending near the old National Guard Armory.

"The deputies believed they were being shot at," Snyder said. "He had actually gotten out his vehicle and gotten on top of one of the berms out there and was engaging the officers."

Montelongo tried fleeing again, but got stuck and was taken into custody. He was shot a total of three times and was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

"He had a semi-automatic rifle and at least one handgun that we can determine at this point," Snyder said.

Officials said Montelongo is also suspected to be in the country illegally. He was arrested and booked into the Chaves County Detention Center on a separate felony drug conviction.

Montelongo hasn't been charged for the shooting, but that's expected to change once the investigation is complete.

New Mexico State Police is now leading the investigation.

No officers were injured during this shooting, but right now a total of seven were placed on administrative leave as a standard measure.
