SANTA FE, N.M. -- A mother is searching for answers after she said her daughter’s privacy was invaded during an incident at Milagro Middle School.

Charlene Sandoval said her seventh-grade daughter was pulled into a room with a female guidance counselor Wednesday. She was allegedly looking for a student who had marijuana in a school bathroom.

But instead of just checking the 13-year-old girl's backpack, Sandoval said the woman made her daughter take off her shoes, socks, lift up her pants, and also lift up her shirt. It left the girl confused and embarrassed.

"We teach our kids that their body is personal and I mean, yeah, you let the doctor check because it’s a doctor and they’re looking for something and making sure that you’re fine," Sandoval said.

Sandoval said her daughter claimed another girl and boy were also searched.

"This male student was pulled in, also searched, and down to his boxers," she said.

The Santa Fe Public Schools district said the allegations are being taken seriously, and they’re working with their director of safety and security to conduct a thorough investigation.

Sandoval said she called the school multiple times and left messages. The superintendent responded 24 hours later and expressed her concern.

"She was not happy at all," Sandoval said. "She said this is going to be addressed immediately."

Sandoval said her daughter did not attend school Thursday and probably won't be back until Monday for a meeting with the superintendent and principal.

"They're at an awkward stage," Sandoval said. "It's a horrible world, you know, and they're already battling with their own emotions because they’re changing you know so this just adds to it."
