CARLSBAD, N.M. -- Eddy County Assessor Gemma Ferguson says her office has collected more than $300,000 in back taxes from oil and gas producers.

However, that number is expected to rise.

"I’m the process right now of getting ready to send out quite a bit more," Ferguson said.

The assessor’s office recently started launched an audit with an oil and gas appraisal contractor after some companies in Eddy County didn't report their gas gathering equipment and failed to pay taxes.

"There were quite a few of those, and then now we’re working on the gathering systems," she said.

Ferguson said while a majority of oil and gas producers in Eddy County do pay their taxes, some can fall through the cracks.

"You have to report it. And unless we had the staff to go out and know what we are looking at, we all missed it," she said. "We don’t have the expertise for this, and that’s really why we hired this company to do this.

"I think the public needs to realize that this isn't just an Eddy County problem. This company has also done work in Union County, Harding County, a little bit in Lea County and Rio Arriba."

The oil and gas appraisal contractor the county is currently working with has already inspected over 80,000 wellbores, pipelines, and gas meters in the area.  The Eddy County assessor said they’re doing this in order to make sure companies surrender their assets for taxation.
