Police say they were notified of the crash on I-10 eastbound at mile post 14 around 12:55 Monday morning. Officers say a 2017 Dodge Van overturned when the driver swerved to avoid hitting a rabbit.

All occupants of the vehicle are from Taiwan, police say.

The driver, 25-year-old Yen-Ting Wu and one of the passengers, 46- year old Yen-Pai Chu, had non-life threatening injuries and were taken to Mimbres Medical Center in Deming, NM.

According to police, two other passengers were not using safety restraints and were thrown from the van in the crash.  26-year-old Chia-Han Chu was pronounced dead at the scene and 33-year-old Hung-Lung Lin was flown via helicopter to Banner Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona with major injuries.

Police say the front passenger, 28-year-old Kaiman Liu, was using the safety seat restraint and was taken to University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.

Police say the Taiwanese Consulate was notified of the crash and helped with notifying family.
