SOCORRO, N.M. -- A giant stuffed teddy bear aloof on a park bench holding a toy gun would grab attention anywhere, but this display spotted near a Socorro elementary this week sent police and parents scrambling.

Socorro buzzed over the news about the bizarre prank. Several viewers brought the teddy bear to KOB's attention through social media. One resident, Dennis Wright, said coworkers and friends were all bewildered about what certainly seemed like a threat against kids across the street.

"What a freaky thing to see right in front of an elementary school, right?" he said.

After an aggressive investigation, police in Socorro say no laws were broken. That gun wasn't even real.

In fact, Chief Mike Winders told KOB it's frustrating for law enforcement. There was not a specific threat attached, but the chief said it can cause panic and emotional damage far beyond any intended joke.

Socorro police say they actually caught up with somebody who admitted to placing the bear on the bench but not to placing the gun on the bear.
