ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Allegations of sexual harassment have permeated the political sphere in late 2017, and in the last few weeks new ones have surfaced in New Mexico politics, involving both current and former legislators.

The allegations have even ended a lieutenant governor campaign by one current state senator.

As a result, several legislators have been working on changes to its policy surrounding discipline for harassment incidents in the Roundhouse, in an effort to crack down on offenders. The drafted revisions clarify who claims need to be reported to, and install a new procedure that calls for immediate investigations.

The changes also call for a required training course in the event of a reported incident.

If probable cause is found, depending on the offender, that person could receive a reprimand, censure or even expulsion.

The public is allowed to provide feedback on the changes through Jan. 8 by emailing comment@nmlegis.gov.
