The fire has been burning since May 1 and has consumed 9,300 acres.

U.S. Forest Service officials said the current strategy for the Kerr fire is to allow the fire to treat existing fire-dependent vegetation within the management area. The strategy has removed heavy fuel loads, decreased forest tree densities and decreased ladder fuels, reducing the threat of future undesirable fire effects.

The fire is burning about 17 miles northeast of Reserve, NM.
