ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Named after the constellation Gemini, the Geminid meteor shower is expected to bring a beautiful show of cosmic fireworks Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

Jim Greenhouse, the space science director at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, said it's named after Gemini because that's where the meteor shower will appear to originate from. In general, it will appear in the eastern sky.

"Actually in the early morning then the area of space where those falling stars seem to be heading from, which is called the meteor shower's radiant, that will actually be up in the sky at that time and you'll have a better chance of seeing falling stars," Greenhouse said.

While the Geminid meteor shower isn't especially rare, Greenhouse said it should display a beautiful show in New Mexico. He said streaks that appear white are actually ice fragments entering the atmosphere, although there can be other colors during a meteor shower.

"If it's other kinds of rock burning up in the sky up above us then depending upon what it's made up of it could appear different colors," Greenhouse said.

Stargazers must be in a dark area to see the best show, and Greenhouse said as many as 30 per hour could likely be seen.

"Get away from any lights or anything else that can obstruct your view and you're patient and can stay outside for quite a long time; then you'll have a much better chance of seeing some falling stars," he said.
