SANTA FE, N.M. -- Though on opposite teams, former U.S. Sens Jeff Bingaman and Pete Domenici found a way to play ball.
"We disagreed about a lot of national issues," Bingaman said. "He was a Republican. I was a Democrat.”
Bingaman was attorney general when he met Domenici. Eventually, Bingaman joined Domenici on the Senate floor.
Though the two disagreed on health care spending, both agreed on energy polices to move New Mexico forward.
"Naturally we were thrown together in trying to figure out what's right to do for the state,” Bingaman said.
Bingaman describes the late senator as attentive and approachable.
"He was someone you could relate to," he said. "He took an interest in people their circumstances and their families."
Bingaman said Domenici is a role model because of his bipartisan efforts.
"He set an example being willing to work across party lines to achieve practical solutions to problems. We need more of that today in the U.S. Congress," Bingaman said.
