LOS LUNAS, N.M. -- It was a wild morning Thursday for Sandoval County Commissioner Jay Block. He chased and fought a suspect trying to escape from Valencia County sheriff's deputies.
Block was at the Valencia County Courthouse Thursday morning for a hearing when he saw a man run out of the building with two deputies chasing after him.
"The training just kind of kicked in ... and I never thought I would be in that type of situation," said Block, a retired Air Force officer.
Block put his car in drive and followed the suspect. Then he got out of his car and came face to face with the guy.
"I saw him come up and it was weird because he looked at me, I looked at him and it was quiet for a few seconds," he said. "That's when he came across towards me and was like, 'Are you ready to go?' ... and I said, 'sure.'"
The two started physically fighting and eventually, deputies arrived to arrest Patrick Valencia.
"I didn't know if he had a weapon or not and I thought, 'well I'm already committed. I'm not going to back down and go in my car,'" Block said. "I'm going to do what I can to delay him so deputies could get the guy."
Valencia was wanted for failing to appear in court. He has an extensive criminal history including several charges for resisting and evading arrest.
Block was not injured.
