HOBBS, N.M. – Scammers are targeting people in the Hobbs area and in parts of Texas.  Over the weekend, Xcel Energy officials say they’ve received reports of attempted phone scams.

Officials say the person on the line is claiming to be an Xcel Energy customer agent and demands payment for a past-due bill, threatening to stop service if that payment isn’t made over the phone.

According to Xcel, the scammers demand that customers use pre-paid debit cards to make the payment.

Xcel officials want to remind customers that a printed disconnect notice is always sent in the mail prior to any effort to communicate further about delinquent accounts.

Customers who receive a suspicious call should report it to Xcel Energy by calling 1-800-895-4999.
