Silver City police: 2 dead after car swept into arroyo by floodwaters

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Silver City police say they found two bodies on Saturday morning following reports that a car was in a flooded arroyo.

When police first arrived on the scene they spotted the vehicle, but because of the fast-moving waters, they decided to wait before searching for its occupants.

Police also say they were contacted by the family of one of those occupants, Laura Ortega. They told police they hadn’t heard from Ortega, and that she didn’t show up for work.

At 8 a.m. police say they found the body of 47-year-old James Morales in the arroyo. Ortega, 57, was found a few hours later.

Police say at this point in their investigation they believe Ortega and Morales had been attending a local concert, and afterward “they drove onto 19th Street and into the fast-moving water crossing 19th Street at the arroyo.”
