PORTALES, N.M. (AP) - Authorities are investigating a deadly crash in eastern New Mexico in which a man suspected of driving drunk crashed his truck into the back of another car at a high rate of speed.
New Mexico State Police say the impact forced the car off the road. It overturned and the driver, 41-year-old Jose Saldana-Pinales, was ejected and killed.
The driver of the pickup, 31-year-old Ricardo Navarrete of Portales, had minor injuries and refused medical treatment.
The crash happened before dawn Saturday.
Officers who responded to the scene reported smelling alcohol, and a subsequent test indicated Navarrete's breath alcohol level was 0.14 percent or nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Navarrete has been charged with vehicular homicide. It's not clear if he has an attorney.
