AOL Instant Messanger to retire in December

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It had a good run, but AOL says it’s shutting down its instant messenger feature after 20 years.

The service started in 1997, and provided many people with their first social experience on the Internet.

The messenger service waned in popularity in the face of competition from more contemporary social media apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and Slack.

AIM’s last day is Dec. 15.
