In a recent issue of Time magazine, I came across a study from Scholarships.com on the odds of high school athletes getting an opportunity to compete at the next level.

Did you know,

only 1 out of 99 high school basketball players go on to play NCAA Division I; only 1 in 1,860 go on to play in the NBA

only 1 in 73 high school soccer players will play Division I; only 1 in 835 will play in MLS

only 1 in 47 high school baseball players will play Division I; only 1 in 764 will play in MLB

only 1 in 41 high school football players will play Division I; only 1 in 603 will play in the NFL.

I've covered high school sports for more than 20 years.  I've seen some pretty exceptional athletes advance to the collegiate level and even get drafted in the pros.  But those cases are the exception, not the norm.  Athletes and their parents need to remember the odds of becoming a Division I athlete or professional player are not good.

Remember why you got into playing sports in the first place.  Have fun, enjoy the game and all the wonderful lessons it has to offer.  Anything else is a bonus.
