ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- UNM men's basketball coach Paul Weir did more handshaking before teeing it up Monday for the annual Lobo basketball Sixth Man Club Golf Tournament.

The event serves a fundraiser for the program. Weir is making an effort to keep current fans and gain some new ones, which is why he is holding a scrimmage on campus at the Johnson Center gym next week.

"We're trying to engage students. We're trying to engage younger fans. We're trying to engage people to get them around our program again or maybe even for the first time," Weir said. "So we're going to spend a lot of time on that in the fall here leading up to the season."

"Honestly, Paul's been tremendous. He's got that energy. He's got that fire," added Eddie Nuñez, UNM's new athletic director. "He knows what it entails to where this program needs to be and where it needs to go."
