ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – As the saying goes: All good things must come to an end, including the historic winning streak by the University of New Mexico women's basketball team.
After 11 straight wins to start the 2017-18 season – a program record – the Lobos (11-1) couldn't get No. 12 on Saturday, losing on the road to Oklahoma (5-5) 105-63.
New Mexico shot 27.4 percent from the field compared to 47.1 for the Sooners, who set the tone early with six baskets from beyond the arc in the first quarter. Oklahoma had a sizeable advantage at the half, 56-25, and New Mexico was never able to recover.
The Lobos fell just one win short of the longest winning streak in their history. Their run of 11 consecutive victories prior to Saturday is tied with the teams of 1977-78 and 2003-04, according to a university press release.
Alex Lapeyrolerie's 18 point led the Lobos, who had an 18-10 advantage on free throws. However, they were outmatched on the glass (32 total rebounds compared to Oklahoma's 60) and couldn't stop the pairing of Ana Llanusa and Gabbi Ortiz, who combined for 52 points for the Sooners.
New Mexico returns to Dreamstyle Arena on Wednesday to face Lamar (5-4).
