Update: Police provided an update Friday, saying the child died of his injuries.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A 7-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in southeast Albuquerque.

Officers responded Tuesday night to Lead Avenue and Montclaire Drive where they found a boy had been struck by a vehicle.

According to police, the boy was walking by himself on the north sidewalk of Lead. The boy knew it was an unsafe area for him to walk in and witnesses tried to draw him away from the road. However, the boy suddenly walked into the road and, according to witnesses, a black Dodge Charger braked but was unable to stop in time and struck the boy.

The boy was transported to UNMH, where he is being treated for his injuries.

Neither alcohol nor speed appear to be a contributing factor. No charges are pending.
