Balloon Fiesta expected to have huge impact on Albuquerque's economy

September 28, 2018 07:02 PM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta leads to big business in the city.

According to research surveys in 2015, Balloon Fiesta generated $177 million in economic impact. In 2017, it generated another $172 million.

“Our main focus for numbers are the number of safe launches and safe landings. The economic benefit is definitely a fringe benefit of a successful event,” said Tom Garrity, the Director of Albuquerque’s International Balloon Fiesta’s Media Relations.

Garrity said last year they tracked nearly 900,000 guests.

Visit Albuquerque also tracks how those visitors are spending money.

Last year, the demand for hotels during the Baloon Fiesta increased from the four prior years by 4 percent.

Balloon Fiesta officials said they're constantly trying to make the experience better for guests. This year they're even adding a professional skydiving team to kickoff afternoon events. They expect turnout this year to be just as big as years past.
