Balloon Museum hosts 'Star Wars' liftoff

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The official start of Balloon Fiesta is just days away, but kids can get a free sneak peek at some 'Star Wars' favorites ahead of liftoff.


Stormtroopers and rebels will take over the Balloon Museum for a free, family-friendly kickoff, complete with take-home, wearable crafts.

Once the kids are dressed up, they can take a trip to the lawn to check out the Darth Vader and Yoda balloons and see Chewbacca lift off as he pilots a remote-controlled balloon.

BB-8 also makes his first visit to the museum, and the 501ST Legion Dewback Ridge Garrison- a costuming group that promotes charity and service- will host meet-and-greets.

"The wonderful part is the kids just light up," said a Legion member dressed up as an Imperial official. "We're the bad guys doing good, as far as we're concerned."

 The free event runs from  8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at the Balloon Museum. School groups are invited to attend but are asked to RSVP. All ages are welcome.
