Albuquerque, N.M. (Jen French)— A 5-year-old girl and her 61-year-old grandmother are in the hospital after a teenage relative allegedly stabbed them. Neighbors who confronted the teen say they got dangerously close to him.
Michael Lucero is a caregiver and keeps his mother close. He lives across the street from her on Madison Street NE.
"I visit her probably 10 or 15 times a day,” Lucero said.
Tuesday afternoon, Lucero said he saw the teenage boy inexplicably sitting on his mother’s couch.
"His hands are all cut up,” Lucero said. “He had blood all over the place, all over his arms and on his clothing."
Other neighbors, like Anthony Donato, quickly figured out that officers were aggressively searching for him.
"I hear 'Get on your stomach,’” Donato said. “I didn't see anything but [I heard] 'Get on your stomach. He tells him like three or four times.”
Neighbors eventually pieced together that officers were tracking the boy in their Northeast Albuquerque neighborhood because officers believed he stabbed his grandmother and little sister minutes before.
"Who knows what was actually going through his own head to actually do that to his own family,” said neighbor Jeremy Sellers.
Albuquerque Police Officer and spokesperson Simon Drobik said the teenage boy called 911 before 1:00 p.m. and claimed someone broke into his grandmother’s Sierra Drive home and attacked the people inside.
When police showed up, Drobik said the teen caller was no longer home. After tracking him down, officers found him at a different home seven blocks away, near Madison Street NE and Phoenix NE.
Lucero said he scooped up his mother minutes before police surrounded her house.
"So I pick her up and brought her here [to my house],” Lucero said. “Then the cops showed up at the house. Then he wound up being in her back shed."
Police shot the teenage boy with a bean bag gun and took him into custody.
"I do thank God my mom's ok,” Lucero said.
Police have not said why the teen allegedly stabbed his family members. He will be held in a juvenile detention facility until he is formally charged.
