ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A customer at an Albuquerque convenience store took matters into his own hands by trying to stop a group of people from shoplifting. Instead, that Good Samaritan wound up getting shot in the process.

Police are searching for several suspects who shot the customer in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven at 86th Street and Central overnight. Police say the victim tried to stop the suspects from shoplifting and chased them into the parking lot where he was shot in the leg.

Police say no one's been arrested so far. The victim is recovering in the hospital and is expected to be OK, but he could have easily been killed

Trish Hoffman, a retired Albuquerque police lieutenant and founder of self-defense program Women Against Crime, said it's understandable the victim wanted to stop the suspects. However, she said it's better to be a good witness for police instead.

"Kudos that this guy felt like he wanted to intervene, but what if he would have been killed over this? But it's not worth it," she said. "If you have to, tell the clerk or you keep yourself safe, give a good description and call the police."

Hoffman said there are situations where you shouldn't wait for police to arrive.

"As someone who is in the self-defense world, this is something we talk about all the time," she said. "When is it appropriate to take action? And it is truly when your life is being threatened."
