ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- An Albuquerque city councilor wants to make the commute on the city’s west side a bit smoother.

Cynthia Borrego wants to widen a stretch of Paseo del Norte.

If Borrego gets her way, Paseo del Norte would go from one lane each way to two lanes each way, from Kimmick to Universe.

Borrego says the benefits of the additional lanes would not only help with rush-hour traffic, but it would also be a welcome sight for first responders.

“I really truly believe that it's becoming an emergency situation because I've talked with police and fire and I’ve come to find even they can’t get through in their emergency vehicles,” Borrego said.

The project would cost more than $16 million. Borrego plans on asking for federal, state and city money to pay for the project.
