ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— An Albuquerque shooting range and gun store is offering classes on how to survive an active shooter.
John Mallory, director of training with Calibers, offers a four-hour course for $99.
It teaches people who to do if they’re confronted by an active shooter.
"Obviously, we need to get away and then find a place where we can hide, possibly barricade ourself and then, if we have to, arm ourself with any weapon of opportunity because the next part's going to be the fight part," said Mallory.
Mallory said the course also teaches situational awareness and mindset skills, which are important to have at home, at work or out in the community.
"You have to understand, we're creatures of habit so what we want to do is to try and break that cycle of being a creature of habit," he said.
Mallory stresses that an active shooter situation can happen anywhere. That’s why he believes it’s important to be prepared and have a plan.
"There's no rhyme or reason to it," he said.
