Pools open Saturday; city says 'ditch the ditches'

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Seven city outdoor pools and three splash pads will open to the public Memorial Day weekend.

The word here is "ditch the ditches." Public pools are the way to go.

"We've printed out about 70,000 ditch-safety passes to help promote safe places for kids to swim instead of playing in the ditches," said Brandon Eagan at the West Mesa Aquatic Center.

Eagan said pool staff has been more than doubled citywide to make sure people stay safe.

"We have trained lifeguards on stand, management supervisors, even cashiers who are trained in emergency response," Eagan said.

Safety is part of pool safety, Eagan said. He encourages everyone to wear sunscreen. In fact, for pool staff it's mandatory.

"Sunscreen is actual actually part of our lifeguards' uniforms," said Eagan.

For those concerned about cleanliness, Eagan said the pool water is tested hourly at all city locations and is high above safety standards.

"It's absolutely constant," he said. "We will probably skim out every outdoor pool every morning, every night when we close down."
