ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – All one needs to make a luminaria is paper bags, sand and candles.

The students from the Albuquerque Youth Symphony spent their Saturday making tens of thousands of these traditional holiday lanterns.

"I’ve been replenishing the tables with sand and candles and more bags and the pallets," said Garret Frye-Mason an AYS student.

The luminarias were going for just $9 per dozen. It’s the AYS’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

"The luminaria fundraiser is to raise funds for our students and help offset the costs of tuitions and to help our families in need with tuition assistance,” said Assistant Director Bea Strong.

The AYS is made up of about 500 students in grades 4 through 12.

"They audition at the beginning of the year and it's a full year program. They come in once a week and hone their musical skills and make music with their friends,” Strong said.

The AYS is still taking orders for luminarias. Click here for more information.
