ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – This town is big enough for two of them.

According to a city spokesperson, Mayor Tim Keller has appointed Gary Lee to serve as the Duke City's assistant mayor. Lee, 33, was appointed a couple weeks ago and will have a $75,000 salary, according to officials.

The Albuquerque native graduated from Eldorado High School and attended college at the University of Southern California before moving to Washington D.C. in 2008 to work for then-President Barack Obama.

He then returned to New Mexico and attended law school at the University of New Mexico after working at the White House.

“I really believe in public service," Lee said. "I don’t think there is anything more important for me (that) I can do than to try to pay that forward.”

According to Lee, he will serve as the mayor’s proxy at meetings Keller cannot attend while helping with policies to better the city. Lee said he was part of the team that passed the Affordable Care Act and wants to use that experience to help his hometown.

"I hope that I can try to bring some of that experience and the knowledge that I learned working in the executive branch and federal government and bring that back to Albuquerque (to) try to help implement the mayor’s vision," he said.

According to the city, Lee will work with City Council members but won’t able to vote or veto.

Keller praised Lee for leaving town, getting an education and then returning to public service in New Mexico.

“There’s a really good quote in 'Parks and Rec' that Ron Swanson says. ‘You’re going to have a lot of job opportunities in your lifetime, but you only get one hometown,'" Lee said. "Albuquerque is my hometown and I really just want to make it better.”
