ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The city continues to work to put a dent in the auto theft and burglary epidemic in Albuquerque.

This year, APD doubled the number of vehicles available for the bait car program.

They've ramped up those efforts, especially in the crowded holiday shopping areas, and it appears to be working. APD arrested a car burglary suspect in a bait car put out December 7.

"The program has been very effective because when someone steals a car," said Simon Drobik with APD. "We're alerted right away, there's video inside the car for prosecution."

APD said the city-owned bait car was parked in the defined fitness parking lot near Candelaria and Juan Tabo.

APD said Christopher Torres took the bait, as many do.

He was allegedly caught on camera breaking-in but unable to actually start the vehicle. After about five minutes he jumps out through the window but police soon catch up to him.

"We know these guys. These guys who steal cars are the same guys over and over, so we're building a case against them," said Drobik.

According to documents, Torres has an extensive criminal history. Now, he's adding to his more than twenty arrests, burglary of a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of burglary tools.
