ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --  Police have identified the alleged armed robber who was shot by a clerk at a Circle K Monday while allegedly attempting to rob the store.

Police say the suspect is 23-year-old Ferron Mendez. A KOB search of court documents showed no previous New Mexico criminal history.

Mendez tried to rob the Circle K store at Eubank and Candelaria when the clerk opened fire, APD Public Information Officer Tanner Tixier said. Mendez was taken to UNM Hospital in critical condition after receiving a gunshot wound to the torso.

Tixier said Mendez will be booked upon his release from the hospital, but did not have a timeline for that release.

Albuquerque Police Department Officer Luis Hernandez says investigators were still trying to determine if Mendez had also fired his weapon.

Police believe Mendez was possibly involved in another armed robbery near Wyoming and Candelaria.

Tixier said the clerk is not facing any charges and will not be identified out of safety concerns.
