BCSO helping get people off the streets

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted an operation to make contact with missing people and get them help.

The department trains “High Risk Victims Unit” deputies throughout BCSO on how to find and help runaway teens and other missing people who could fall victim to crime, or become involved in committing it themselves.

When a family reports a runaway, BCSO doesn’t just let those cases sit around. That’s because deputies know what can happen if they don’t find someone.

“Every single case of juvenile sex trafficking that we have investigated, that child was a runaway at some point,” said Deputy Kyle Woods.

Last week, deputies spent eight hours focusing on just missing person’s cases.

“Almost always, one of the first questions we train law enforcement and anybody making contact with these juveniles is, asking them where they want to live, and getting them involved in their placement,” said Deputy Justin Roybal. “You see their eyes light up, not ordering them around or yelling or scolding them or forcing them to return to an unsafe place at their home.”

Deputies contacted 63 people and got nine juveniles and two adults help.

“It's not just find you, recover you, kick you to a place you're going to run, it's find you, wrap services around you, keep in contact with you, try to get you more resources,” Deputy Woods said.
