It was funded with a voter-approved $4 million general obligation bond.

Belen’s fire chief says the city outgrew the old station. He says there wasn’t enough space for firefighters to train or sleep.

The new station is three times as big, has four sleeping quarters, a fitness area, kitchen, conference room and administration offices.

The chief says the fire station will be a good recruitment tool.

Firefighters will permanently start working out of the new station in two weeks.
