BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M.—Bernalillo County commissioners are set to discuss investing in a major project Tuesday in an attempt to tackle the state’s mental health crisis.

Up for discussion is a new crisis triage center that would provide a multitude of services including psychiatric urgent care, behavioral health clinics and a drop-off area for law enforcement and corrections officers.

UNM Hospital would be responsible for designing and implementing the services, but the project is a collaboration between the hospital and the Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services.

Officials hope the center would cut down on many of the unnecessary calls made to 911 and trips made to emergency rooms.

If approved, services could be in place by July 2021.
