ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The governor is adding another issue to the legislative session – getting rid of organ donation discrimination based on disability.

Her decision comes after a KOB 4 story highlighted the issue but pointed out the governor hadn’t put the issue on her agenda.

Danny Gonzales, the head coach of the UNM football team, is advocating for Senate Bill 158.

The legislation would make it illegal to deny an organ donation to someone because of their disability.

A spokesperson with the governor’s office issued a statement regarding the legislation:

“The governor has advocated for the rights of disabled New Mexicans throughout her entire career. This is an issue with which the governor has firsthand experience – as you may know, the governor’s late sister, Kimberly, was disabled. She is glad to include SB 158 for legislative consideration and looks forward to signing legislation preventing organ donation discrimination for thousands of New Mexicans with disabilities.”
