ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It's official. New Mexico’s Chevel Shepherd has won The Voice.

She is the first New Mexican to win the national singing competition. Her pure country performances during the season won over the hearts of Americans.

Chevel was born and raised in Farmington New Mexico. KOB caught up with her father, Robert Shepherd.

“It’s just been surreal,” Robert told KOB. “I told her today, this is personal but I’ll let New Mexico know, I said ‘you left as a young girl, you’re coming home as a young woman.”

Albuquerque had the highest rating for The Voice the night before the big reveal.

“Couldn’t do it without all of y’all,” Chevel said in an interview with KOB. “Y’all have just supported me since the beginning and it’s been a rollercoaster ride of a journey.”

Chevel’s coach, Kelly Clarkson, told KOB that hometown support makes all the difference.

“My life changed because my town got behind me. So thank you for getting behind your girl,” Clarkson said.
