ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The Albuquerque City Council has approved a measure to help the police department hire and train more officers.

The Albuquerque Police Department has about 850 officers and expects to top 1,000 within the next year.

APD officials say the department has gotten a lot of interest from experienced officers, looking to come from other agencies.

Monday night, the city council approved $3 million to add a new police academy class and pay for the officer’s uniforms.

The money was made available because of increased city revenue.
