ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - CNM is offering a new program to help those learning English work in customer service settings. School officials say this will help prepare the workforce for a growing need in New Mexico.
Karla Urrutia just graduated from CNM's Bilingual Customer Service program.
It's two semesters long and it's designed to help non-native English speakers find jobs in the communication's industry.
Karla, who is bilingual in English and Spanish, said learning how to work in a professional setting was key.
"Really focus on how to, be able to, kind of like adjust to that specific client and their needs," she said.
Instructor Amy Christensen says this program helps those going into the workforce learn the nuances of what kind of English is used in customer service settings.
"There's at least five or six different call centers that CNM is working with and have had meetings with to figure out what their employees need to be skilled at so that's what we were trying to address in the classes themselves," she said.
On Wednesday, the City of Albuquerque announced a major tech company setting up a new call center in the city, bringing hundreds of jobs.
This is what this program prepares the students for. Karla says she's confident in her new skills and hopes to continue working in the business side of things.
"I'm just trying to get as much experience as I can in customer service and working with other people and other Spanish speakers," she said.
