RIO RANCHO, N.M.—Wienerschnitzel and the Roc Solid Foundation built three playgrounds for three children with life-threatening illnesses in the backyard of their homes.
On Saturday, five-year-old Jesus Ramirez and his sisters were making their new playground their kingdom.
Jesus hasn’t laughed or played without a care in the world in a while.
“Last year, two months after he turned four years old, he was diagnosed with Leukemia. That was back in October 13th, so it’s been a little more than a year since he’s been getting treatment at UNM,” said Luis Ramirez, Jesus’s father.
Luis said it hasn’t been an easy journey.
“He doesn’t understand yet why he’s getting that treatment. Why he goes to the hospital. Why he has to get that spinal tap. Why he has to be put to sleep to find out whether he needs any additional treatment,” said Luis.
Jesus has to miss out on school and play dates with friends. That’s why volunteers spent the morning putting together a playground in the Ramirez family’s backyard.
Now, Jesus can play without being exposed to other children and not get any other illnesses or allergies, so his treatment can go smoothly.
Jesus still need another three or four more years of treatment. Luis said his son has been resilient, but he hopes Jesus will be motivated to keep fighting with his new playground.
“This is going to be basically, a happiness for him. He’s happy, as you can see, but it means a lot to him and also to my family,” said Luis.
Roc Solid Foundation will be working on four other playgrounds in two other states in a few weeks.
