Corrales hosts balloonists during Balloon Fiesta

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Corrales has become a popular spot for balloonists.

More than 40 balloons could be seen taking off from the Community and Rec. Center soccer fields Tuesday.

Lynn Siverts, Corrales Parks & Rec. director, said the launch isn’t promoted, but he says it’s a way for people to avoid the traffic, crowds and parking fees during Balloon Fiesta.

“People do like it here because of how much grass we do have here. (It’s) a little better for their balloons and its safer here," Siverts said.

The tradition has been going on for 20 years, according to Siverts.

He says Balloon Fiesta competition pilots choose Corrales to launch because they need to be a mile out from Balloon Fiesta Park.

“They don't call us to let us know that they are taking off or landing or whatever here. We just have the gates ready and open for them,” Siverts said. “We do welcome them here, they are running out of room so we do want to keep this available as much as we can."

Pilots are expected to take off from the community center again Thursday and Friday morning if winds are headed south.
