ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Democrats are holding a rally in Albuquerque in response to President Trump’s event in Rio Rancho.

Organizers said the rally, at Tiguex Park, will focus on unity.

Several elected local and state Democratic leaders are expected to speak at the event.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller kicked off the event.

"Leaders do not personally attack women and people of color, leaders do not make fun of the disabled and leaders do not make walls that divide us," he said.

The Democrats remained confident that the president would not be able to turn New Mexico red, but they said they cannot take voters for granted.

"He's looking for extra states where he might find some more electoral votes," said Rep. Ben Ray Lujan. "We should take that seriously though, and we should understand the magnitude of this moment and come together and assure the country that New Mexico is not going to turn red."
