ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Detectives are still investigating the details behind the death of a young girl near Belen last August and it could be a while before they find answers.

At a riverside party in Rio Communities, 16-year-old Vanessa Ordonez was struck by a truck and found dead by police. She also had a gunshot wound.

Lt. James Harris of the Valencia County Sheriff’s office said they do have a suspect but because there are conflicting stories from witnesses, they have to go back and re-interview them.

“Unfortunately when there is a situation like that, a lot of people scatter. We have to seek those people out, again and find them. Determine exactly what they saw and when they saw it," Harris said.

Investigators will have to recreate the crime scene, look at toxicology reports and DNA swabs from the crime lab before they can begin re-questioning witnesses.

“Right now we are working with the New Mexico State Police to get the crime scene reconstruction done,” Harris said.

Detectives said they still need to examine an important piece of evidence from the incident.

“Obviously there is a black box in the vehicle, a data recorder. We are going to be downloading that data recorder to verify some information that we gathered at the scene," Harris said.
