ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – An Albuquerque motorist has come up with an eye-catching way to prevent thieves from stealing his truck.

A few months ago, Nico Martinez started putting a bright yellow boot on his truck every time he parks, even in his own driveway. It takes about 10 seconds to put it on and take it off.

"If the thieves are getting creative, I might as well get creative too," he said.

In the last four years, Martinez said his truck was broken into four times. Two of those times, the thieves tried to hotwire it. That's why he decided to start booting his own truck.

"A $50 boot saves me thousands and thousands of dollars in replacing a vehicle," he said.

Martinez hopes any thief wanting to steal his truck will think twice, knowing it won't be so easy to drive off in his.

"People want a quick and easy score. They don't want to have to work for it," he said. "So seeing a big yellow boot on the side of a truck just kind of says we don't want to mess with that truck."

If you decided to start booting your own vehicle like Martinez, just get ready to do a lot of explaining every time you park.

"I have friends who drive by saying, 'When are you going to pay your parking ticket?' he said. "I had people at Home Depot ask me why I got booted in the parking lot.”

Similar boots are available to purchase online or at auto parts stores.
