ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— On Monday, drivers began navigating the Southern Boulevard road construction project in Rio Rancho.

No major issues were reported.

Rio Rancho’s mayor, Greggory Hull, believes the city supports the project, citing how three out of four voters approved additional funding for roads.

Southern Boulevard will be reduced to one lane from Golf Course to Highway 528 for about a year.

Hull said there has been a concentrated effort to support businesses during that time.

"Our goal here is to make sure our businesses suffer as least as possible. While, yes, traffic will slow down anytime you reduce lanes down to one way each way, if everyone takes a little extra time, little patience we can get through this together,” Hull said.

The Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce has organized the “Shop on Southern” initiative. It’s an organized marketing plan to get people to use the businesses along Southern.

The $14.5 million project will expand the road and repair aging water mains.
