ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Starting next week Albuquerque Rapid Transit buses will begin moving down the road. It’s only training for the bus drivers, but the impact for other motorists will be immediate.

Drivers will soon face an $80 fine for driving over the double white line and into the ART lanes.

“The buses are using those dedicated lanes so, it's a safety issue,” said Albuquerque Police Department Public Information Officer Simon Drobik.

Crossing the double lines is a prevalent offense. On Tuesday, more than a dozen drivers were seen crossing the ART bus lanes in a five-minute span.

Drivers who are cited will have an opportunity to fight the fine.

“A citation is 80 dollars and obviously you always have the option of going to court and talk about that. And I can see that happening quite a bit,” Drobik said.

Fines won’t start rolling out yet. It will be a slow ramp-up in enforcement. Officers patrolling near the ART line have been instructed to hand out warnings during a 14-week educational grace period.

“It comes down to safety, so we want the safety of the people on the bus, the bus drivers themselves and the people driving on the road,” Drobik said.

The buses are expected to be operational for commuters sometime this winter.
