RIO RANCHO, N.M.- A man was found dead inside a Rio Rancho home following an explosion Thursday night.
According to fire marshal investigators, the explosion, at the home located on 2nd street, in between Inca Rd. and Sandia Blvd, was not natural gas related.
Police were first alerted to the situation Thursday afternoon when a family member of the man asked them to do a welfare check.
Upon arriving, officers noticed signs of a recent explosion, including smoke.
People who lived in homes nearby were asked to either evacuate or "shelter in place."
Emergency crews did not enter the house until the Albuquerque Police Department's Explosives Unit rendered it safe.
Following the discovery of the man's body, nearby residents were allowed to return home and roads were reopened.
"It's quiet out here, very quiet. Weird to see something like this here in this area," said Michael Chacon, who lives near the house where the explosion occurred.
